Costume Care
Here is a short checklist or how to care and store your costumes before the show.
- Make sure you have all pieces of the costume & always keep them together - including hair pieces.
- To help protect the costume - hang it up in a garment bag if you have one, or carefully hang it up away from everyday clothes. Most costumes are made with delicate fabrics or have sequins on it that can catch on other materials and snag. Hanging your costumes will lessen the chance of wrinkles and damage.
- Dance costumes are NOT EVERYDAY WEAR! Costumes should not be worn before the show. This prevents them from getting dirty or damaged.
- Be sure all zippers, buttons, and catches are fastened before storing.
- Finally, place the costume in a room or closet that is dark - extended exposure to sunlight can fade your costumes.
- To help with wrinkles (especially with tutus), our best recommendation is to use a steamer.
- Very delicate fabrics or costumes with sequins or rhinestones can be hung up in the bathroom where steam from a shower will naturally flatten out wrinkles. Make sure to not get it wet.
- You can check the label to see if ironing the dance costume is safe. Please be advised that most costumes CANNOT be ironed. If the label does say it’s safe to iron, turn the costume inside out, set the iron on it’s coolest setting and place a thin towel between the iron and the costume fabric for extra protection.
Please do not wash, iron, spray, soak, or apply any products to costumes unless specifically instructed.
Trying new methods to remove wrinkles or odors can cause permanent discoloration or damage, and we may not be able to replace the costume.
